Bernhard Buttmann received his artistic training in organ, conducting and evangelical liturgical music at the conservatory in his hometown of Munich.
After taking the Meisterklasse with Hedwig Bilgram, he continued his studies with perfectionism with Michael Schneider, Flor Peeters and Albert de Klerk.
From 1985 until 2002 Bernhard Buttmann was “Kirchenmusiker” at the Christuskirche in Bochum, where he developed a collaboration with the “Bochumer Symphonikern” orchestra.
From 1987 to 1994 he was artistic director of the Bielefelder Musikvereins and was professor of organ at the Musikhochschule in Dortmund.
As an organist he has won significant awards at major international competitions (Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Wettbewerb Leipzig 1980, Anton-Bruckner-Wettbewerb Linz 1982, Karl-Richter-Wettbewerb Berlin 1988).
He has performed extensively in major cities in Germany, as well as in numerous festivals in Britain, Italy, France, Spain, Poland and Russia.
On behalf of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum Bernhard Buttmann designed the layout of the new Klais-Orgel organ and performed the same task for the Konzerthaus in Dortmund.
Numerous CD recordings document the artist’s extensive repertoire, who has served as “Kirchenmusikdirektor” at the Sebalduskirche in Nuremberg since 2002.
