Markus Schmitt
Markus Schmitt, born in 1965, studied composition with Wilhelm Killmayer and Hans-Jürgen von Bose at the Hochschule für Musik und Theatre in Munich. He received further insights for his own artistic development from his collaboration with Hans Werner Henze, his piano studies with Ansgar Janke and not least from his intensive intercommunication with other composers and musicians of his generation.
His oeuvre includes works for chamber, orchestral and vocal ensembles. His chamber opera “aiaia” premiered at the Bavarian State Opera Festival in 2001, and his stage music for Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” has been performed for several years at the Bavarian State Theater. Markus Schmitt has received numerous prizes and awards and has been artist-in-residence at the German Academy “Villa Massimo” in Rome, the Internationales Künstlerhaus “Villa Concordia” in Bamberg and the German Center for Venetian Studies in Venice. As a founding member of aDevantgarde Festival Munich, he was the promoter and artistic director of the acclaimed children’s musical theater series “KLONK!” from 2003 to 2009.
Markus Schmitt currently lives in Augsburg, Bavaria, and teaches at the Leopold Mozart Center of the University of Augsburg. His compositions are published by “Musikverlag V. Nickel, Munich”; a CD dedicated to his works and containing chamber music and vocal works has been released by “Cavalli Records.”
